Research on older workers and lifelong learning
A new book from Cedefop
Cedefop, the European Centre for Vocational Education and Training, has initiated a project on research on Older workers and lifelong learning. The purpose of the project is to establish a network and produce a joint reader on the above theme. RF Rogaland Research has got the mandate to moderate the network and coordinate the work, as well as edit the book.
The reader will be a composition of 15 articles by 24 distinguished scholars representing Japan, USA and Australia in addition to 10 European countries. The authors are represent the leading edge within the thematic of older workers and lifelong learning, some more focused on working life and older workers, some on lifelong learning, and still others on research at the crossroads of these two broad lines of research.
The overview that the book gives is very timely. The absolute and proportional number of older workers in the labour force is increasing. Furthermore, during the last decade or so, lifelong learning has become a priority in European educational thinking and planning. Yet, the research and discussion on older workers and lifelong learning is scattered and, in fact, hardly exists.
Project period: 2004-2005
A research base and network on older workers and lifelong learning
Cedefop has extended the project Older workers and lifelong learning to a new period of 2005-2006. The purpose is to widen the network as well as to establish and maintain an on-line databank for Cedefop on research on older workers and lifelong learning. The network and the databank will serve primarily researchers but will provide also valuable information and contacts for policy makers and labour unions. In addition, the information and knowledge presented will be valuable for providers of various learning and training activities promoting lifelong learning for and on older workers in and outside work organisations. Finally, the project will provide valuable information to management, which is concerned about the demographic development and situation of the older workers in their companies, and wishes to promote and invest in lifelong learning among their employees.
