BEEP - Biological Effects of Environmental Pollution in Marine Coastal Ecosystems
”Stavanger Workshops” became a new concept among BEEP participants. Research focus in BEEP was on the development of nsew biomarkers and all BEEP participants were invited to participate in sampling and measurement of their own biomarkers in a series of controlled exposure experiments at the Akvamiljų Center outside Stavanger.

BEEP was a three-year EU financed research project with 30 Institutes from 12 countries.
Prof. P. Garrigues from University of Bordeaux was project coordinator and Dr. Odd Ketil Andersen IRIS & Akvamiljų coordinated the Stavanger Workshops and the North Atlantic Region activities.
In addition to EU financing, IRIS & RF-Akvamiljų had support from the Norwegian Research Council through the Strategiske Institutt Program (SIP) – ”Hormone disruption in marine invertebrates”

This brought about extensive suits of biomarkers, both traditional and novel, measured at the same biological material. Three main types of exposure scenarios organized at four separate occasions were performed as long-term low dose chronic exposure through the water phase of blue mussels, shore crabs, cod and turbot.
