Compost

In Norway, deposit of organic waste should cease in 2009. - Therefore alternative waste treatment methods are evaluated to solve the upcoming waste challenge.
In Rogaland county, IVAR, the intermunicipal waste treatment company is handling domestic waste and sludge. Sludge treatment plants, compost plants and combustion plants are together with planned biogas plants supposed to receive this organic waste increase.

IRIS is - through a region development project (RUP) - managing the recirculation of “new” organic waste fractions into two smaller private composting plants. These plants have central positions in handling waste fractions from agriculture, chicken farms and aquaculture.

The main activity in the projects is to improve the total management regards to; control the process, no discharge, sanitation, end product composition and that the comply follows the rules applied for composting plants. Through several projects new waste fractions (marine fouling, mussel, and feather) have entered these plants and the waste fractions have been stabilized, analysed and treated in a controlled manner.
